Replica of Terry Fox’s Sock. Terry Fox was a Canadian national hero best known for his Marathon of Hope, in which he attempted to run across the entirety of Canada in a gesture of national unity.

Folklore states that on a road outside Grenville, Quebec, just before his crossing into Ontario, Fox was visited by a gigantic British red kite falcon who offered him a choice between a short-lived earthly kingdom and a long life or an eternal heavenly kingdom inevitably leading to his martyrdom. Whether true or embellishment, Fox would not finish his run, becoming acutely ill and passing swiftly during his attempt. After a period of general ambiguity and confusion, coroners discovered his death was the result of esoteric isotope poisoning and—while never proven—many Canadians insist covert elements in the Unites States of America were somehow involved.

Fox’s final effects, including his iconic sock worn on his prosthetic leg every day during his run, were displayed in competing sanctuaries in the neighboring towns of Hawkesbury and Grenville. Contention surrounding the final resting place of his relics would make this strip of the Ottawa River a hotspot in the ongoing Quebec Conflict and the Patriot Day Agreement included a special provision adjudicating the dual management of a single Terry Fox Sanctuary.

An unofficial ritual of Canadian civic life, most citizens will visit Fox’s sock at least once in their lives and the facility displaying it is built to shepherd an endless flow of pilgrims eager to get a mere glimpse of their beloved object.

LMX Unlimited has recreated Terry Fox’s sock as a matching pair, allowing an even closer union between the spiritual body of the nation and that of the citizen.
