George Grant Nationalism T-Shirt

Archival Replica of the Fourth George Grant Conference of Canadian Nationalism T-Shirt.

100% Cotton. Made in the USA.

Replica of a T-Shirt made to commemorate the fourth George Grant Conference of Canadian Nationalism at the University of Alberta in 1989. Grant is best known for his blistering requiem for a lost Canadian nationalism: Lament for a Nation (1965). While never an active participant in his namesake gathering, his death the previous year catalyzed the tensions already evident in Calgary’s ‘Hot Summer’ of ‘89. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) attempted to enforce a curfew on the concert of Western Secessionist bands opening the conference, resulting in a violent confrontation and premature cancellation of the entire event. Five years later the T-Shirt would become an icon of Canadian culture when it was worn by Western militia leader Benjamin Ramsay in his televised address to the nation during the Meech Crisis. The proverbial ‘bloody shirt’ was destigmatized after reconciliation and the rise of Stephen Harper, subsequently transforming it into an icon of cross-Canadian Nationalism. A perennial victim of bad bootlegs, LMX Unlimited has produced an exact replica from Ramsay’s original garment.
